Roland Kuit SoundLab II book of patching: Nord Modular / G2

Roland Kuit SoundLab II Mr Kuit is one of three very very talented modular gurus (the other 2 being Rob Hordijk and Tim Kleinert) – they all do very deep work and really go beyond the limits of the synth, in this case of course the Clavia Modular series which is unfortunately no longer available atm, but we all hope for a G3 sample-able synth since they got a sample engine and the cool G2 which must not be changed that much to still be cool – of course it’s nerdy but… well, this is part 1! so be aware to learn something!

well, why I tell you this? because he wrote a book, Roland Kuit. This may be a book even I may go for and I think I already have one! so why buy another boook? huh?

GRP A4 – wilder analoger Synthesizer – doch nicht nur ein “halber” A8?

a looot of audios from the GRM A4 and large review in german about the italian analog synth (not modular but hi-quality synth)
he’s refererring to the “double A4″ A8 and tells us, that the A8 has not those FM features the A4 has, also it has better thought routings here and there and is basically well made – more mod sources. the odd things is just because it is not modular – no pitch bend control over the filter and some things don’t trigger right in the sequencers (the 2×8 mode trigger settings are more suitable to the 16step mode) and some other things that are related to the non-modular hard wired routings – nevertheless good sounding synth. I listened and checked out the A8 very deeply in about 1hour years ago, so I can tell you – it’s a hi quality standard – so I am with Theo (who wrote that article) in a lot of cases,… but some things I could imagine differently, just because I do different kind of music. but hey, there’s no perfect synth – but almost analog hell to heaven conversion has been done ;)

So… let’s talk synths.  Specifically, modular synths.  Not your average piano-style format, a modular synthesizer involves patch chords that link up modules performing different functions – producing a soundwave, filtering, sequencing, etc.  If that’s confusing, it’s because modular synthesizers are the future!  However, we must step back and realize that the format has actually been around since the 1960s.  Don Buchla specialized in his modular Music Boxes throughout the 60s and 70s, but the proliferation of affordable digital synths moved the modular style to the margins of production… until today.  We want to shed light on the rebirthed DIY modular movement, pay homage to the legendary Buchla 200, and celebrate the modernized 2005 reintroduction of the Buchla 200e.  Our program, titled ‘Source of Uncertainty‘, provides a platform for some of the artists exploring the Buchla 200(e) and DIY modules, and allows YOU to demo them.

Live beats with UltraNova and Launchpad: Explained - this is a nice little Demo of the Ultranova and Ableton with 3 Launchpads in use. first controlling the usual clips, second for drums and third controlling FX. Let me say, that for drums a dynamik pad would be more suitable of course – but this is of course by Novation – so is obvious they use it as a drum pad as well.

in fact this just a “modern” normal set of things you can use in todays music production – by one company, the ultranova being your DAW control and display. so note this is just (almost) could be “remote” controller in this demo OR the synth, ..

so just to tell you those things not “said” but should be clear.

Tone2 ElectraX – VST – a “standard workhorse” kind of synth (VA without Box)

Well I was searching for some softsynths, that fit well into todays production standards and found the ElectraX, which should work quite well on standard music productions without being boring – it’s a va without a box ;)

Tone2 – VST, VSTi, download, synth, synthesizer, AU, audiounit, audio, sound, music, instrument, effect, software, electronic, music.

of course it isn’t just a standard, you may compare it to the Waldorf Largo (Blofeld-Plugin Synth without sample access), it can do samples, wavetables and FM between the 3 oscillators and has 2 filters and arpeggiator. so this is – so to say- a Virus or Blofeld-style synth. The special one in this synth is fractal synthesis which has a sort of changes from “a bit modulated by subtle noise” to a foggy kind of sound, as demoed here (in the end) – it has a vocoder FX inside as well. so it’s somewhere between the NI Massive and standard VAs.

Hugh Le Caine – Bubbles – 1955 based on a water drop

this is from 1955 by Hugh Le Caine (Dripsody, per nastro magnetico), if you search for him, you’ll find him being a synthesizer pioneer – and well – here’s his music of THAT time when others listend to a bunch of guitar based crap you won’t want to even be mentioned here..
this is based on one single recording of a drop of water, you might imagine that samplers weren’t even sold 10 or 15 years later, so…
